Tom was a kind and gentle soul who will be deeply missed. He was healthy and active with a very happy life until a few weeks before his death on January 15, 2023, at the age of 80, of rapid onset lung disease. After meeting in Alabama in 1991, he and his wife, Nancy Leigh Sack, were joined at the hip in a loving, spiritual relationship for 30 years. Tom was a tender and devoted father to his accomplished and loving daughter, Amanda Belle Huber, whom he shared with his first wife, Robin Sims Hickman MacCurdy, married for 15 years. Tom accompanied Amanda on many adventures, including to the Himalayas and West Africa. Tom grew to love and become a very important father-figure for his equally loving step-son of 30 years, Jason Edward Fortuna. One year ago, Tom and Nancy moved to Maryland to experience the joys of grandparenting. Tom rapidly grew to thoroughly enjoy being "Gramps" to Caleb and Jeremiah Fortuna, who also showered Gramps with the kind of well-received love only a preschooler can give. Tom developed a very warm and caring relationship with Kelly Beth Davison, loving partner to Jason Fortuna and devoted mother to Caleb and Jeremiah. Born in Maysville Kentucky, Tom was the only child of Charles Stanley and Louella Walker Huber. Tom was a National Merit Scholar and earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry (Georgia Tech 1963, Florida State University 1970). His work history includes Biochemistry research, Clinical Chemistry, and Toxicology. He very much enjoyed the analysis and problem solving of his lab work and appreciated his colleagues. Tom was fortunate to have 20 pleasurable years of retirement where he had the time to enjoy being kind and giving to others, long walks outside, music, singing and playing harmonica in a choir and a band, shooting hoops (even until the month before he died), and continuously learning by being curious about the world and people. In a gesture to be of comfort to the family, please share your memories of Tom by writing something on Tom's Tribute Wall on this website.
