Swarup Guchhait

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Swarup Guchhait, a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. Swarup was born in Calcutta, India on December 10, 1959, and unexpectedly departed from this world on July 18, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Ras Bihari Guchhait and Anupama Guchhait, and his adored pup, Rufus.

Swarup leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories for his surviving family members: his beloved wife, Janet Guchhait; his loving children, Amadeus Guchhait, Ashley Guchhait, and Toby the pup; and his siblings, Swapna Das (Asis Das), Swadesh Guchhait (Swarnali Haldar), and Anita Denion (Neal Denion). He leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews, who affectionately referred to him as their “Uncle Rup,” as well as family in India. His presence within the family will forever be treasured and deeply missed.

Swarup was known for his quick wit, his love for his family, and his resilience. He was a survivor of colorectal cancer, who inspired family and friends with his courage. He also had a deep love and sense of gratitude toward the country he immigrated to at nine years old. Because of this, he served in the U.S. Army from 1977 to 1982.

He was working toward retirement after a 40-year career in the airline industry, which allowed him to do what he loved to do best: help people. He began as an employee of Piedmont Airlines, before acquisitions made him an employee of US Airways and then American Airlines. As we gather to commemorate his life and mourn his passing, let us remember Swarup with fondness and celebrate the profound impact he had on all who knew him.

Family and friends may gather at the Candle Light Funeral Home, 1835 Frederick Rd. Catonsville, MD 21228, for a visitation on Saturday, July 27, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM with a funeral service taking place at 4:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made in Swarup’s name to BARCS , the American Cancer Society , or the American Heart Association .
