Dr. Alfredo B. Aldave, surgeon, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died on January 4th in his home at Charlestown Retirement Community. He was 97 years old.
Born August 24, 1922 in Trujillo, Peru, he was the oldest of 11 siblings. In 1955, he graduated from medical school in Lima and immigrated to the U.S. to finish his medical training. After a short time in New Jersey, he came to Baltimore's St. Agnes Hospital where he completed his residency. This is where he caught the eye of a beautiful young nurse named Patricia, who would turn out to be the love of his life. They married in 1959 and eventually settled in Catonsville where they raised six children.
Dr. Aldave loved being a surgeon and was fortunate to be able to do what he loved for over 40 years, with a large part of his career spent working in the Emergency Room at St Agnes Hospital. He had an insatiable thirst for knowledge, was a voracious reader and routinely attended medical seminars well into his seventies. His bedside manner was second to none, and he had an uncanny ability to explain a complicated medical condition or concept in layman's terms. He became the de facto neighborhood doctor, for his children's friends - piercing ears and mending a multitude of life's mishaps with a kind and gentle hand.
He and his wife loved to travel. Together they visited many places including Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, Budapest, the Galapagos Islands, Egypt (where, already in his 80s, he was brave enough to ride a camel!), and to Scotland to see his granddaughter play lacrosse for the U.S. team.
Dr. Aldave was an avid sports fan who loved soccer and boxing and enthusiastically cheered on the Ravens, Orioles, and Terps. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren's various games and events, and his grandchildren loved their “Poppy.”
Dr. Aldave is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia, nee Hally. He is survived by his 6 children: Lita Kearney, John Aldave (Jody), Maria Aldave, Roberto Aldave (Missy), Alfie Aldave (Jeanne), and Cecilia Booth (Jay); 20 grandchildren – Jackie, Ryan (Karen) and Sean Kearney; Katrina Jones (Mike); David Guldan; Jack, Hally and Rebecca Aldave; Maddy, Paige and Andie Aldave; Lucia, Angelina, Elena, Keela, Alfie Jr., and Lorenzo Aldave; and Tori, Trey and Ella Booth; 3 great-grandchildren – Delaney and Brooks Jones, and Rosie Kearney; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at St Agnes Church (5422 Old Frederick Rd, Baltimore, 21229). Visitation will be held in the church on Thursday, January 9, 2020 from 4-7pm and mass will be held on Friday, January 10, 2020 at 11am.
