Andrew Edwin Rehkemper passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. Andy was born in Washington, D.C., the oldest child of three children to Arthur “Art” and Elizabeth “Betty.” The family called Silver Spring, Maryland home before relocating to Medford, NJ, and Englewood, CO. The family then returned to Columbia, MD in 1984.
Andy is survived by his wife Catherine “Catie,” and their children: Elizabeth “Libby,” Amelia “Mia,” and Mary Catherine “Mary Cate;” as well as his mother, Betty Rehkemper, brother David Rehkemper (Amy), mother-in law Joanne Ruddy, and in-laws Elizabeth Hatch (Austin); Joseph Ruddy III; John Ruddy (Deborah); Rosemarie Timmermann (John); Bridgid Hartman (Timothy); Paul Ruddy; Theresa Ruddy; Joanne Ruddy; and William Ruddy. Andy is preceded in death by his father Arthur Rehkemper, his brother Peter, his father-in-law Joseph C. Ruddy, Jr., sister-in-law Megan and brother-in-law James.
Andy attended St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel, MD, where he was a stand-out student athlete, earning the honor of representing Maryland in the Big 33 Football All Star Game in 1990. He then went on to attend Towson State University on scholarship to play football, leading them to an appearance in the Division 1-AA playoffs in his senior year. Additionally, while at Towson, Andy was credited as being one of the original “founding fathers” of the Fraternity of Offensive Linemen (FOOLs) and will always be a Tiger for Life (TFL).
Andy received a B.S. from Towson State in geography and environmental planning leading to a successful career in surveying, planning and geospatial analysis with several top engineering firms and government offices in Maryland.
In 1995, Andy married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Catie, after a courtship through college. Soon afterwards, they bought their townhome in Academy Heights. It was here that Andy and Catie resided for the next 29 years, raising their three daughters. A lifelong Catholic, Andy and his family were parishioners of St. Agnes before becoming members of St. Mark Catholic Church in Catonsville, Maryland.
While his physical size and play on the athletic field would indicate otherwise, Andy was a gentle giant. A soft-spoken man who loved his family and friends, being known for his sense of humor and quick wit. Andy was a devoted fan of the Towson Tigers, Washington Redskins, and the Baltimore Orioles, frequently attending games with his family and friends. Andy instilled his love of sports to each his daughters, involving them in local recreational leagues at young ages and taking the opportunity to coach all three of them at some point. Andy deeply enjoyed and took immense pride in watching his daughters go on to play lacrosse for various Catonsville teams, Club organizations, at Mount de Sales Academy, and eventually all at the Division 1 level.
In November of 2021, Andy suffered a cardiac arrest leaving him with a brain injury. He then endured an extremely emotional and challenging recovery during the next years of his life. Although his life was vastly different, his sense of humor, personality, love of competition and sports, and his deep affection for his family never wavered. His hugs were still the best! He will be deeply missed by all who know and love him, especially Catie and his girls.
