"Andy" George Andrew Reed

In the spirit of celebration, we invite everyone to remember the full, giving life of George “Andy” Andrew Reed who passed away on December 4th, 2017 in Columbia, MD surrounded by his loving family. He was 94 years old.

Andy was born on September 22, 1923 in Baltimore, MD to Frank and Eva Reed. Andy was a long time resident of Woodlawn, MD and saw many decades of change. Andy served in the 82nd Airborne Infantry Division in the U.S. Army during World War II in several locations in Europe including the UK, Germany and France. After serving his country abroad he came home and began his career as a Firefighter for Baltimore County Fire Department at Station 3 in Woodlawn where he proudly served his community for over 30 years. He remained active in the firefighting community long after his retirement in 1983 by attending meetings and events and was cared for on several occasions by the kindness of his firefighting brothers and sisters. He was still known to the current staff of Station 3. After many years in the fire department, he took a job driving a school bus for Baltimore County Public Schools for 17 years. He enjoyed greeting the children and their families every day and stressed the importance of getting their education. Andy was also an active member of Emmarts United Methodist Church. He was always looking for ways to improve the church, and helped out by cutting the grass on the church grounds.

His dedication to his home community was as unwavering as the support and care he showed to his family. He was married to Emma Reed (nee Rohrer) in the late 1940s and lovingly cared for her until her death on January 21, 1999. He and Emma are survived by their son John F. Reed and his wife Susan Reed (nee Gardner) and their two daughters Stephanie Todd (nee Reed) and Emily Reed. He helped to care for his granddaughters and was always a supportive and encouraging presence in their education, athletic and other extracurricular pursuits.

Loved ones who preceded him in death include his mother Eva, his father Frank, his younger brother Frank aka Frankie who was killed in action during WWII, his half-siblings Morgan, Rose, and Harry, and his wife Emma.

He will be remembered best for his stories and willingness to help anyone he could. Andy will be greatly missed by many.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Andy’s memory are made to the Baltimore County Fire Department Retiree’s Association or the Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center.
