Audrey Anna Zanto

July 31, 1928 – January 15, 2023 (age 95)

Audrey Anna Zanto, 95, of Catonsville, Maryland passed away peacefully on Monday, January 15, 2024.  A lifelong resident of Maryland she lived in Catonsville for over 70 years.

Audrey was the daughter of Frank John Zanto, Sr. and Anna Makowiecki-Zanto, both first generation natural born Polish American citizens and both of Baltimore, Maryland.  Audrey was born at home on Lehigh Street in East Baltimore and attended Saint Michael’s Business School of Baltimore. Following graduation Audrey worked at Stewart’s Department store downtown eventually settling at Crown Cork and Seal Company where she worked for over 50 years.  Her tenure there was the frequent subject of a rivalry with her late brother-in-law Walter Zimmerman who was a long time employee of Continental Can Company.

Audrey lived her entire life with Anna, her mother, Frank Sr., her father, and Frank Jr., her brother, until each of them passed. Audrey and her brother Frank lived together for 86 years.

Audrey was a beloved aunt and great aunt.  Known for creating unique memories by including personalized sketches in notes and cards. She saved many memories and could frequently produce memorabilia from events in your life that perhaps you did not save.  Audrey had a wonderful sense of humor, often self-deprecating.  When asked about the ages of her and her sisters she would say, “Joan is older than dirt, I am older than mud, and Frannie walked with the dinosaurs.”

Something of a family historian Audrey could remember stories and facts from many years ago.  Her stories often began with, “back in those days…” or “in 19 aught 5…”  Audrey had a big heart and cared about everyone, her first thought was typically for people’s well being and comfort.  A loyal and knowledgeablesports fan of the Orioles, Ravens, Colts, and her beloved University of Maryland Terrapins basketball (women’s and men’s) and football teams. Audrey was dedicated to her extended family and was a fixture at Catonsville intramural and schools sports, theater events, and any activity that involved her nieces, nephew, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Audrey was proceeded by Frances Zimmerman, her sister, Frank John Zanto, Jr., her brother and Ernest Bahler, her brother-in-law, and Michael Zwingelberg her grandnephew.  Audrey is survived by Joan Bahler, her sister; nieces Paula Bahler and Mary Zwingelberg; nephew David Bahler; grandnieces Katie Huber, Sarah Huber, and Anna Zwingelberg; grandnephew Nicholas Huber and Kaylie his wife.

Visitations to be held at Candle Light Funeral Home on Thursday, January 18, 2024 from 4:00-6:00pm. Interment will take place at St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
