Betty Carol Sterner (Reid) passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family, after a long illness, on November 24th 2023, at the age of 73. Betty was raised in Catonsville by her loving parents, Raymond and Marie Reid. She was the middle child of siblings Linda, Robert, Tom, and Jean.
Betty left an impact on thousands of children and families in and around Catonsville and Arbutus during her 30+ year career at the Catonsville Y preschool and surrounding Y preschool centers. After retiring as the Regional Childcare Director in 2015, the Y of Central Maryland named the Catonsville preschool center after her- the “Betty Sterner Y Preschool,” a legacy honoring her passion and dedication to early care and education.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Steve Sterner, who continues to live in Arbutus where they raised their children. She is also survived by three children, Ryan Sterner (Marina Smelyanskaya), Erin Hager (David Hager), and Lauren Sterner, and 8 grandchildren who will miss her dearly, Watson Sterner, Macy Hager, Simon Hager, Alexander Johnson, Tatum Hager, Penelope Johnson, Mishka Sterner, and Marie Sterner. Betty’s warmth, kindness, storytelling, and dessert recipes will be remembered fondly by the many friends and family members she has touched in her lifetime.
Visitation will be held at the family-owned Candle Light Funeral Home, 1835 Frederick Road, on Thursday and Friday, November 30th and December 1st, from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm. A funeral mass will be held at Ascension Catholic Church in Arbutus, 1527 Potomac Avenue, on Saturday December 2nd at 10:00am with a wake to follow.
