Charles George Joneckis

Charles George Joneckis, 95, of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2018.

Charles was born in Vilnius, Lithuania on February 2, 1923, and emigrated with his parents Maurice and Kasis Joneckis to the United States in 1926.  Charles grew up on a farm near Westminster in Maryland and later in “Little Lithuania” in Baltimore with his parents and siblings — one brother and three sisters. Charles was the last survivor of his birth family.  In 1941, he enlisted in the Navy and served as an engineer, 2nd class, on several destroyers and transport ships in the Pacific Theater. He saw combat in several island campaigns during World War II.  Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he worked as a clerk for the Western Maryland Railroad and Chessie System Railroad for over 40 years.

Charles met Catherine Whittington of Annapolis, Maryland and they were married in 1948. They spent several years with each other before starting a family.  Charles and Catherine had two sons, Christopher (59) and Lance (55). He is survived by his wife Catherine (90), grandchildren, Caroline (21) and Evan (17) and several nieces and nephews.  In retirement, they enjoyed local and regional travel, vacations, outdoor walks, remodeling a new home, and spoiling grandchildren. They especially enjoyed family vacations in Maine and North Carolina. Dad was devoted to Mom, taking sole care of her ever-increasing needs due to dementia.

Dad was active as an adult leader in Boy Scouting, enjoyed home remodeling, carpentry, gardening, all things railroad, motor boating, and fishing. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He worked endlessly to support his family and children, investing time and resources, and sacrificing much for his family.  Dad was educated and wise, far beyond his formal high school education.  He was self-taught in many areas including auto-repair, carpentry, electronics, and many other areas. He was a Mr. Fix-It regardless, and no appliance or home repair ever got the best of him. Dad, being a child of the depression, reflected the philosophy of that era.  Dad was quite inventive, reusing parts and material to repair or rebuild, and while he was frugal he was not stingy — neither with his money nor with his time that he gave to his friends and family.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 8th at 9:30 AM followed by a Catholic Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Angels chapel at Charlestown, Md.  Interment will be on Friday, February 16, 10 AM at the Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, Owings Mills, MD.
