Dr. Robert T. "Bob" Singleton, a cardiologist and Navy veteran, died on September 12 at Gilchrest Hospice Center in Towson. The Catonsville resident was 93.

Robert Tiffany Singleton, the son of John Henderson Singleton and Florence Belle Tiffany Singleton, was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania. He moved to Baltimore in 1941, quickly became an Orioles fan, and spent the rest of his adult life in Maryland.

He started coursework at Johns Hopkins University before enlisting in the Navy to serve in World War II from 1944 to 1946, where he earned the Pacific Theater Ribbon and the American Defense Ribbon. He served on the USS Birmingham in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged.

After the war, he completed his B.S. degree at the University of Maryland in 1951, and earned his M.D. from the University of Maryland in 1953. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, he met a nursing student, Elizabeth Greening Rohr, from Baltimore. The two married in 1949 and worked together at the University of Maryland from 1980 to 1991.

Dr. Singleton was Associate Professor of Medicine, Emeritus, at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He served as Director of the Cardiovascular Laboratory at the University of Maryland Hospital (now the University of Maryland Medical Center) from 1960 to 1985. The Hospital named The Robert T. Singleton Cardiac Interventional Laboratory in his honor in 1988. Upon retirement in 1991 after 37 years, he was often heard saying that he enjoyed both cardiology and the University of Maryland so much that he never felt he worked a day in his life.

He was a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a member of the Maryland Heart Association, the Southern Medical Association, and the University of Maryland Medical Alumni Association, serving as its President from 1978 to 1979.

Dr. Singleton, who lived on Brook Green Road in Ten Hills for 40 years and in the Charlestown retirement community for 10 years, was a longtime supporter of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Opera Company. He was an avid biker, often biking more than 10 miles per ride until age 90. He also enjoyed sailing and playing bridge.

He was a member of the St. Andrew’s Christian Community and Second Presbyterian Church, where he was an ordained Elder.

The former Catonsville resident was married for 60 years to the former Elizabeth R. "Bette" Singleton, who died in 2010.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. October 1 at Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Charlestown, 715 Maiden Choice Lane.

He is survived by two sons, Robert T. Singleton, Jr. of Reisterstown and Richard G. Singleton of Ellicott City, and five grandsons.
