Egons Gunnars Are

Egons Gunnars Are, 95, died quietly on January 31, 2024 at MedStar Harbor Hospital where he had been in Hospice care.

Egons was born on April 23, 1928 in Riga, Latvia, USSR, the son of Ernests Jakovics and Erika Petchak. After enduring hardship in WWII where he lived in a displaced persons camp, he came to the US as a young man and became a citizen in 1956. Egons worked for the W.R. Grace Company and then the Maryland State Highway Administration from which he retired. He enjoyed taking bus trips, stamp and coin collecting, and playing bingo and other games. He loved plants and flowers and enjoyed planting roses and flowering bulbs in his Catonsville garden.

Egons is survived by his sons, Vilmars Are and Osvalds Are, daughter-in-law Katherine Are, grandson Justin (Malka) Are and their children Eatom and Ilanit, granddaughter Heather (Richard) Effler and their daughter Christa, grandson Tyler Are, and stepdaughter Donna (Fred) Lange and their children Erin and Christopher.

Family and friends may gather at Candle Light Funeral Home, 1835 Frederick Rd., Catonsville, MD 21228 at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2024. The memorial service will begin at 10:00 a.m. Private internment will take place at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge, MD.
