Eleanor Theresa Czaja passed peacefully the morning of April 24. She was 97 years old. She was born in Baltimore to parents Anna and Walter, had two siblings Dorothy and Milton who died young, and an older sister Margaret, to whom Eleanor was devoted. She outlived them all. Her many cousins and friends mourn her passing.
Eleanor had a joyful spirit, an unwavering faith, a sharp mind, and a great sense of humor. She was an avid reader whose passion continued even as her eyesight started to fail.
She attended St Casimir grade school and St Elizabeth’s Business School and spent her career at the Social Security Administration. She and her sister traveled internationally to places like Spain, Portugal, and Poland. She was especially proud of her Polish heritage. On weekends she and her sister often drove into New York City to see a Broadway play or to the family’s Lewes, DE beach house. She lived in Rosedale, but after retirement moved with her family to Winter Park, FL where she lived for nearly 20 years before returning to Maryland.
She remained independent until her last year, and eventually moved from Waugh Chapel in Gambrills to St Joseph’s Nursing Home in Catonsville, where she enjoyed daily Mass, activities, and spending time with the staff and other residents.
