Elmira (Myra) Catherine Vicchio (nee Higgins) died peacefully on April 17, her 91st birthday. She was born in Philadelphia, PA to Elmira (nee Wilkens) and Joseph Higgins. She was the third of six children. She is survived by her sisters Ida, Jean, and Helene. She is predeceased by her brother Joseph and sister Nancy. The family relocated to Baltimore, where she attended Western and graduated from Forest Park High School. While in her senior year of high school she met her future husband of 56years, John R. Vicchio Sr., who predeceased her. She is survived by her four children Gale Vicchio Clark and her husband Dennis, Dale Vicchio Wolters, Stephen J. Vicchio and his wife Sandra and J. Rocco Vicchio Jr. and his wife Kim. She was known as “Myra” to all, “MomMom” to her 12 grandchildren and “GiGi” to her 20 great grandchildren.
She devoted her life to her family and was always supportive of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; babysitting, providing wonderful meals, chauffeuring multiple generations to practices and sporting events and in general being a constant cheerleader for them all! For many years she did the bookkeeping and billing for her husband’s business.
She was active in multiple school and church organizations during her lifetime, including St Joseph Monastery’s Ladies’ Club, Mount De Sales Academy’s Parents’ Club, and the Mothers’ Club of Mount Saint Joseph High School. She also volunteered for many years as a docent at the Maryland Historical Society. Myra’s hobbies included painting, crossword puzzles and reading. She loved the ocean and fun in the sun. She was a particularly good cook and will be remembered affectionately for her open invitation to weekly Sunday breakfasts for the family, often entertaining 20 or more, including surprise guests of the grandchildren.
After sustaining a broken hip, she resided for the last two years of her life at Lighthouse Assisted Living where she received warm and attentive care. She looked forward to daily visits from her children.
She was a loyal and dedicated friend to many and will be greatly missed.
In Lieu of Flowers, donation may be made in her honor to Mount de Sales Academy, or Mount Saint Joseph High School.
