Frank John Zanto, Jr
November 21, 1933 – April 18, 2020 (age 86)
Frank J. Zanto, Jr., 86 of Catonsville, Maryland passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2020. A lifelong resident of Maryland he lived in Catonsville for over 60 years.
“Frankie,” as he was known to his family, was the son of Frank John Zanto, Sr. and Anna Makowiecki-Zanto, both first generation natural born Polish Americans citizens and both of Baltimore, Maryland. Frank was born at home on Lehigh Street in East Baltimore and attended Patterson High School. Following graduation Frank went to work for C&P Telephone Company of Baltimore City, later known as C&P Telephone of Maryland, and then Bell Atlantic. He worked through the evolution of the “telephone company” for over 40 years. During these years Frankie also served in the US Army Signal Corps from 1954 to 1956, spending part of this time in South Korea, and served our country for six additional years in the reserves.
When he returned from service Frank joined his family in Catonsville, where he lived for the rest of his life. During his long life Frank enjoyed golf with his brother in laws, crabbing, family trips, and was an avid Baltimore Colts fan and season ticket holder. He never forgave the Colts for leaving Baltimore. He soon embraced the Ravens, wearing his Ravens cap during every game. Frank was dedicated to his extended family and was a fixture at Catonsville intramural and school sports, theater events, and any activity that involved his nieces, nephew, grandnieces and grandnephews. Frank was also a long time member of Severna Park Elks Lodge #2482.
Frank is survived by Audrey Zanto and Joan Zanto Bahler, his sisters; nieces Paula Bahler and Mary Zwingelberg; nephew David Bahler; grandnieces Katie Huber, Sarah Huber, and Anna Zwingelberg; grandnephew Nicholas Huber.
In this unusual shelter in place time there will be a private internment on Thursday, April 23, 2020. Frank’s family will plan for a memorial service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to consider a donation to the Severna Park Elks #2482 mortgage fund. Checks may be mailed to the address below with a notation, “In memory of Frank Zanto for mortgage fund.”
