Griffith "Griff" B. Dorn, Jr. was born in Frostburg, Maryland on February 9,1936 to the late Griffith and Eira Dorn. He passed peacefully on October 29, 2021 at the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his parents, Griffith Byrd Dorn, Sr. and Eira Dorn (Nee Reese), his first wife, Marion Dorn (Nee Dillard), and his sister, Linda Vandenberge.
Griff and his three siblings had a happy childhood full of interesting experiences living all over the country. Finally settling in Baltimore, he attended City College and went on to graduate from Towson State Teacher’s College (now Towson University) and Johns Hopkins University where he earned his Master's Degree in Education and completed all coursework toward his doctorate.
In 1989 Griff retired from a long and successful career as an educator for Baltimore County Schools. He spent his retirement years substitute teaching, gardening, traveling, spending time with family and reading- mostly history. For many years, he could often be found at the Hopkins University library, surrounded by students in the role of unofficial mentor. Griff's role as “host father” to many international students through AFS was one of his greatest joys, and he enjoyed enduring relationships with several students from all over the world who still call him “Dad”.
Together with his wife, Denalyn, Griff loved to host gatherings of family and friends. His steak dinners were much anticipated and the family Easter gathering was a highlight each year, with up to 55 family members attending.
Griff is survived, and will be greatly missed, by his devoted wife, Denalyn Dorn, as well as his loving children, Julie Dorn Atherholt (Jeffrey), Janet Dorn Menninger, and Mary Beth Chamberlain (Jeff), his sister, Nancy Kalin of Ocean City, and brother David Dorn, Sr. of Laurel. Griff was also an adoring grandfather to eight and great grandfather to seven. His loss will be felt by many other caring family and friends.
Family and friends may gather at the Candle Light Funeral Home, 1835 Frederick Rd. Catonsville, MD 21228 on Saturday, November 13 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM for a memorial gathering with a memorial service taking place at 11:00 AM.
