Harold Ray Sachs

Harold R. Sachs, 93, of Baltimore, passed away early Monday morning at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Born in Nuremberg, PA, he was the son of the late Daniel Ray Sachs and Gertrude (Ulshafer) Sachs, and a graduate of Nuremberg High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the Air Force. While in the Air Force, he served as a chaplain’s assistant. After serving his term in the Air Force, Harold attended and graduated from Bloomsburg State Teachers College with a degree in elementary education. During college he worked as an orderly in the O.R. of the Bloomsburg Hospital. After graduation from college, he began teaching 6th grade at Bloomsburg Elementary School. In 1959, Harold married Evelyn Gilchrist, mother of their children, Beth Anne Sachs and Harold (Hal) Ray Sachs II. Harold’s daughter, Beth, was born in 1961. In 1962, he moved to Bucks County, PA, where he also taught elementary school. His son, Hal, was born in 1964. In that same year, he began working as a textbook salesman for the Follett Publishing Company and moved with his family to Baltimore, Maryland. Harold left Follett to become an elementary school administrator. He worked as an assistant principal at Solley Elementary, Quarterfield Elementary, and Woodside Elementary during his career with Anne Arundel County Public Schools. In the 1970’s, his daughter, Beth, wanted to raise and show Netherland Dwarf rabbits, so Harold spent many weekends traveling to rabbit shows throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Harold was very active with the Lutheran Evangelical Church in America and was ordained as a Deacon of the church and served as a Deacon at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Baltimore. For nearly 20 years, Harold made his home with his friend and partner, David R. Klein. Harold and David traveled extensively together, visiting many countries, yet always enjoyed returning home to family, friends, and the company of their Jack Russell terriers. After David’s passing in 2010, Harold continued to travel with friends and family. His last international travel was to Prague and Ireland in 2022 with his son, Hal, and his family. Harold enjoyed socializing with special friends and neighbors. He was very easy going and had a great wit. He enjoyed spending time with his two children and six grandchildren. He enjoyed raising and showing orchids, reading books and newspapers, and listening to classical music.

Surviving is his son, Hal Sachs, and his wife, Amy, of Ellicott City; his daughter, Beth (Sachs) Holden, and her husband, Patrick Holden, of Millersville; his grandchildren, Ryan Holden; Kate (Sachs) Morrison and her husband, Sean; Justin Holden; Adam Sachs and his wife, Miranda; and Stephanie Sachs; a sister, Jean (Sachs) Frable, and her husband, Jack, of Weatherly, PA; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his partner, David R. Klein; a brother, Clyde Sachs, who was killedin WWII; a brother, Daniel M. Sachs, and his first wife,Catherine, and second wife, Gladys; a sister, Ruth (Sachs) Singley, and her husband, Chester; and a grandson, Derek Holden.

His funeral service will be held on May 1st at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1900 St. Paul St., Baltimore, MD. The service will start at 5pm and there will be a reception at the church immediately following the service. There will be a private burial at a later date in Nuremberg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church’s “Lifting Up Together Capital Campaign.”
