Harold "Hal" Anthony Youd, Sr., Major U.S. Army (ret.), beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle died Wednesday October 21, 2020 in Baltimore, MD. He was born February 10, 1942 to the late Douglass and Sara Youd. A native of Stratford Connecticut, Hal earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1965 from the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport Connecticut, where he studied Industrial relations, Economics and English.

Major Youd accepted a commission in the U.S. Army entering active duty in 1966. He served in assignments around the world, including Europe, Korea and Vietnam (Two Tours) as a Tactical Intelligence and Counterintelligence Officer. His military decorations and awards include the Bronze Star Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters) Meritorious Service Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (7 Campaigns), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal as well as receiving a Meritorious Unit Commendation. Major Youd served as an Executive Officer and was Director of Intelligence and Security for a 4,000-soldier signal brigade with a $27,000,000 budget and 25 separate installations. He later was an instructor at the National Cryptologic School at the National Security Agency on international terrorism and counter-terrorism techniques. He led a staff of professionals at the Defense Intelligence Agency conducting analysis of West African countries, preparing briefings for Congress, State Department and other Federal agencies.  He wrote on military capabilities and authored numerous articles on the political, economic and defense posture of sub-Saharan countries in this role. Afterwards, he became a trusted advisor and coordinator to the Republic of Korea and West German military on information collection systems, training and telecommunications. After leaving the Army, he worked as a security consultant for many years at the Environmental Protection Agency.

In retirement, Hal enjoyed genealogy research, classic movies, Facebooking with family and friends, as well as watching his adopted home team, the Baltimore Ravens every Sunday during football season.

He is survived by his wife Youra Youd, daughter Angel Kim (Radin), son-in law Sean Radin and grandchildren Max and Mia of Washington, D.C., daughter Cheryl A. (Howard) Laban of Fairview, MI, son "Ryder" Harold Anthony Youd, Jr. of Westminster, MD, grandchildren Courtney A. (Eathan) Bean of Lansing, MI;  Tyler A. (Katelyn) Laban of Fairview, MI, great grandchildren, Gradie, Duncan and Hattie. Brother Paul (Sheila) Youd of Petersham, MA, sister-in-law Phyllis (Douglass) Youd of Connecticut. He was predeceased by his parents Douglass and Sara Youd, brother Douglass S. Youd, Sister Patricia A. Mozzi and her husband Enzo Mozzi.

Hal, a kind and caring man will be forever missed and remembered fondly. He will be buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at 3pm.
