Herman Anthony Schaeffler, a life-long resident of the Baltimore area, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2018 one month short of his 93rd birthday.   Herman was the last of nine children born to George and Mary Viola Schaeffler.  He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Anna May (“May”) Schaeffler, who passed on October 8, 2000. They met and were married in 1947 and after his career with the U.S. Post Office and May’s with C & P Telephone Company, they spent 15 wonderful years in retirement together before May’s passing.

He joined the Army in 1943 and after basic training in Texas and California, he served with the 1251st Engineer Combat Battalion during the Battle of the Bulge. He always said that his time in the service was like being in a summer camp he never went to as a child. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

He is survived by his sons Leo and Kurt Schaeffler and their wives, Marylyn and Allison; granddaughters Elizabeth and Sarah, step grandchildren Kevin McClelland and his wife Heidi, Rebecca Mesa and husband Greg, and Gary Gillespie. Also, step great grandchildren Jacob and Ian McClelland and Joshua and Rylee Mesa.

Herman especially loved his time with his granddaughters. As a third parent, he was involved in every aspect of their lives and they adored him.  He could always be found cheering on their teams no matter what the sport from grade school through college.  He was especially fond of children and animals and greatly appreciated the visit by therapy dog “Dempsey” during his recent rehab stay. He was a member of the Yale Height Boys Club in the ‘50s and 60’s where he coached boys’ softball and baseball and also girls’ softball. In the ‘70s and ‘80s he was a member of the Yale Heights Athletic Club where he coached many of those boys who are now men in slow-pitch softball.

Visitation will be held Monday, February 19, 2018 at the Candle Light Funeral Home from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held February 20, 2018 at the funeral home followed by the interment at Meadowridge Memorial Park.
