James (Jim) Frederick Hawes, 90, beloved husband of Gwennette (Potts) Hawes, died Monday, July 11, 2022. He was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, to the late Wesley Hawes and Matilda (Fitzgibbons) Hawes.
Jim and his sister Patricia (Pat) grew up in picturesque Central New York and Alexandria, Virginia. He graduated from George Washington High School in 1949 and earned a bachelor's degree at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech). After graduating from VPI, Jim served one year in the Army, resulting in 70 years of, "When I was in the service..." stories that he enjoyed sharing with family and friends. In 1985, Jim earned a Master of Administrative Science from The Johns Hopkins University.
Jim worked for The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company (C&P) for 32 years as a Traffic Engineer.
A long time Ellicott City, Maryland resident, Jim was a member of Mount Hebron Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed coaching Howard County Youth Program (HCYP) basketball and playing tennis with Gwennette and neighborhood friends at the North St. John's Swim and Tennis Club. An avid golfer, Jim endlessly tinkered in pursuit of the elusive perfect golf swing.
Jim and Gwen moved to Charlestown Retirement Community (Catonsville, MD) in 2016, where Jim proudly wore Virginia Tech gear and was known as the "Hokie Man."
Friends and relatives describe him as a good man who was kind, welcoming, and funny. He realized his goal to attend the high school graduations
of his four granddaughters, and recently celebrated the college graduations of Alexis (University of Maryland and Tess (Temple University). Besides his wife, Gwennette, he leaves behind his daughter Jean (partner Jim) of Baltimore, MD; son Jim (wife Christine) of Ellicott City, MD; son Tom (wife Sheri) of Columbia, MD: and granddaughters Alison, Alexis, Tess, and Kailin.
His family will receive friends on Friday, July 22nd from 2:00 to 4:00 PM (Memorial Service from 3:00 to 4:00 PM) at Candle Light Funeral Home located at 1835 Frederick Rd., Catonsville, MD 21228.
