Michael Sebastian Koesters (May 10,1960- April 9,2024) Born in Baltimore, Maryland; preceded in death by his parents J. William Koesters and Margaret Flynn Koesters. He is survived by his wife Andrea Koesters, daughter Callie Koesters, son-in-law Daniel Mervis and grandson Theodore Jacob Mervis, son Michael Koesters and daughter-in-law Taylor Hicks, sister Margaret Gessler and brother William Koesters and so many other loved family members. An unassuming Renaissance Man - Mike was a mix of art, science and sentiment. He achieved his undergraduate and MBA from Loyola College in Maryland. Through the years he was a drummer, mountain biker, trivia expert, car enthusiast, woodworker, home chef and baker with very precise measurements, of course. He loved finding solutions and creating something that could be just practical, beautiful or both. He was the first to remember every one of our anniversaries. He insisted on celebrating his birthday for as long as he could. He assured us if he announced it was birthday month at the beginning of May - he could celebrate all month. The day-of, he always celebrated by having ice cream for breakfast.
Mike was proud to be from Locust Point and of his big family of aunts, uncles and cousins and all the stories that he loved to share - and we loved to hear. He cared about Baltimore City and what was happening to people whether he knew them or not.
Mike was a kind and funny husband, dad, grandfather (aka “Chip”), and friend. He had plenty of jokes to share, and was always happy to share a beer and listen to a good story, no matter the topic. He was a fantastic listener and a great person to be around. Whenever he moved on from a job, he left with new lifelong friends. He had a way of making significant connections.
Mike was a self-taught woodworker. He loved spending countless hours in his workshop learning how to make cutting boards, bowls, pens, mantles, dining room tables, coffee tables, and more-until they were perfect; although, he would try to argue that point. Progress, not perfection, he would say. When asked what he loved about woodworking, he said “Making stuff for the joy of it, not expecting compensation.” He loved gifting his work to others, and even when someone insisted on paying him, he liberally applied the “friends and family discount.” So many people have something that he made in their homes, and we hope that these pieces of art are something that will always remind you of him.
He also greatly enjoyed music and could often be found kicking back in front of a fireplace or on the couch not just listening, but blasting music (often The Who), so loudly that the house alarm went off, which meant that he was having a great time enjoying the simple things. He also loved Baltimore WTMD, and in addition to being an annual supporter, he excitedly called into the station during listening games, where a single three seconds of a song were played, to win tickets to local concerts. He won many of these contests, and we’re so grateful for the memories made during them. He supported the station for more than just the fun concerts, but in support of enrichment of the City.
Mike faced his diagnosis with courage and optimism every step of the way. He bravely participated in a clinical trial at the National Cancer Institute, hoping that it would benefit himself, but was confident that his participation would help others. He cared deeply about helping others, and hoped that one day there will be better treatment, a cure, and more memories to be made for families.
