Nazzarene Vernon Carfine was born on March 8, 1938, and peacefully went home to the Lord on December 11, 2024 with his family by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel Maday and Mary Rose Carfine; his siblings, Gabriel Norman Carfine and Barbara Lee Welsh; his brother-in-law, Francis Xavier Welsh. Vernon is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria Carfine; his loving children, Pamela English (Reynold), Vernon J. Carfine (Kimberly), and Michael Carfine; his sister-in-law, Joan Cucina; cherished grandchildren, Cory Zeller (Jeremy), and Kim Sewell; great-grandchildren, Vivian Rae and Greyson W. Zeller; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. His presence within the family will forever be treasured and deeply missed.

After graduating from St. Benedicts, Vernon followed his brother’s path and attended Calvert Hall High School where he started as offensive and defensive tackle for the Varsity football team. He was honored to play 2 Thanksgiving Day games at Memorial Stadium even though Calvert Hall lost both years. Vernon earned the respect of his head coach and future NFL Hall of Famer, George Young, and received a full scholarship to Hardin-Simmons Christian University in Abilene, Texas.

After returning from Texas, he worked at Eutaw Savings Bank where he met the love of his life. They married in 1961 and moved to St. William of York Parish. Vernon coached the 14-16 St. Williams boys’ team to a couple CYO championships and had lifetime friendships with his players.

In 1967, the family moved to Howard County, where Vernon became the Basketball Director at St. Paul’s/Resurrection and coached and oversaw the boys’ and girls’ teams. He saw the talent brewing in the 8th grade class of 1975 and recruited his friend and previous player from St. Williams, Phil Kearney, as head coach to lead that team to the Sweet Sixteen Championship held at Mount Saint Joe.

Vernon held various sales jobs including he and his wife owning and operating a seafood carryout business called The Five Seas named after the 5 in the family.

In the last 46 years, he worked at Belair Road Supply as a salesman and helped build this family business by starting the masonry building materials division. Vernon’s bigger sales were the DC Convention Center, and all the mortar and accessories on Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium. He retired December 31, 2023. Over the years, family, friends, and customers would ask Vernon when he was going to retire and his response was always the same “When I’m 6 feet under”. He loved his late boss, Bud Adams, the people he worked with and his customers.

He lived life to the fullest enjoying time with family, dear friends, being a coach, mentor, having a great love for music especially big bands, cooking, and watching sports events. Vernon was a kid at heart his entire life and one of his loving qualities that attracted so many people to him.
