Neil Patrick Kenny

Died at age 85 on 4 September 2023 in Catonsville, MD. Neil was born and raised in Washington, DC. He attended St. Teresa’s Grade School, Archbishop Carroll High School, MountSt. Mary’s College, and John Carroll University. Neil was a lifelong educator of English and literature, beloved by his students and colleagues at the University of Dayton, John Carroll University, the University of Maryland, and Essex Community College. His love of teaching and learning extended to his family and many friends, as he shared his knowledge and experience in classical music, literature, theater, art, gardening, family history, and travel. Neil embraced the culture and energyof living in Baltimore, the history and charm of teaching Shakespearean literature in Stratford-upon-Avon, and the tranquility and beauty of spending summers at Rehoboth Beach. He delighted in basking in the sun on the beach, swimming beyond the breakers in the Atlantic, exploring unique bookstores, and tooling around on his bicycle. He made himself at home wherever he was, easily making and nurturing lifelong friendships. He happily initiated and won many Scrabble games; even a rack full of vowels didn’t scare him.

Neil is preceded in death by his parents James P. Kenny and Clare G. Kenny, and his brothers Stephen and Aedan. Neil leaves behind an adoring family, including his sister Sheila K. Padgett; his nephews and nieces Steve Kenny, Sarah Hartzel, Jim Kenny (Troy), Clare Padgett, Mary Flounlacker (Jay), Chris Padgett (Jane), and John Padgett, and his many grandnieces/nephews, cousins, and friends.

A remembrance and celebration of Neil’s life will be held on 14 October 2023 from 11:00AM-1:00PM at Candle Light Funeral Home, 1835 Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD.
