Raymond Dennis “Bo” Menton, Jr., of Ellicott City, Maryland passed away on July 16, 2022 at the age of 89. Bo was a retired dentist and longtime football official with the Atlantic Coast Conference. He graduated from Loyola College in 1954 and the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 1958. Thereafter he practiced dentistry with the U.S. Navy, serving with the 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan. While there, Bo officiated military football games on the island and earned selection to the officials’ crew for the “Rice Bowl” game between the Army and Air Force.
Following his service to our country, Bo opened his dental practice in Howard County, Maryland and began his officiating career with the ACC. Bo was proud to be the first dentist in the county to treat children in the Head Start program and built a strong practice meeting the county’s dental needs. During his officiating career, he worked over 270 major ACC college games and 12 bowl games on-field, then continued to serve in the replay booth, as a television liaison, and as an official observer, into his 80’s. He was devoted to the ACC and considered his football colleagues a second family.
After retiring from football, Bo developed a skill and passion for the game of croquet. He competed in tournaments along the East Coast and was MD State Croquet Champion in his division. In 2016, Bo moved to Miller’s Grant Retirement Community in Ellicott City. There he founded a croquet club, which is now a thriving group of over 60 residents. Bo adored Miller’s Grant and cherished his friends and neighbors there.
Perhaps Bo’s fondest and most successful role was that of grandfather to his 13 grandchildren (Lindsay, Colin, Katharine, Joe, Ben, Julia, Michael, Jack, Charlie, Mary Kate, Charlie, Ned and Suzanne). He was an ever-present fan at their games, plays, concerts, and other events big and small, often travelling hours just to be there. Each grandchild knew he/she was special to Bo and had a unique relationship with him. He was deeply proud that all 13 of his grandchildren are college graduates. In addition to his grandchildren, Bo is survived by his four children: Carolyn Cullen “Cully” Veal (Greg), Robert Garrett “Bob” Menton (Paula), Thomas Farrell “Tom” Menton (Janet), and Maureen Tara “Mo” Doetzer (Bob). Other survivors include his sister Carol Marks Menton, his brother Ralph Glaser Menton, and one great granddaughter (Charlotte). Bo will be missed deeply by all those who knew and loved him.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Mark’s Catholic Church (chapel): 30 Melvin Avenue, Catonsville, Maryland, at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 23rd. Bo loved the outdoors, especially flowers, but preferred them in their natural state. In lieu of flowers, feel free to donate to your favorite charity.
