Richard Andrew Wafer, 89, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Wafer; his oldest daughter, Karen Spindler and her husband Jeffrey Spindler, and his youngest daughter, Kimberly Wafer; his two grandsons, Daniel Spindler and David Dunnigan; and his sister, Frances Peregoy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Francis and Helma Marie Wafer; and sister, Marie Evans. Richard was born on October 30, 1927, and grew up in West Baltimore. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June, 1945 as a naval air crewman. He was honorably discharged in August, 1946, and then re-enlisted for four more years in the U. S. Naval Reserves. After leaving the military, he attended Baltimore Junior College and married Patricia A. Downs on September 12, 1952. Richard worked for Westinghouse for a number of years and completed his formal education at Johns Hopkins University. In 1967, he decided to form his own company, R. A. Wafer and Associates, and after 25 years of running the business, he retired in 1992. Today, the company is owned by his son-in-law, Jeffrey, and is still thriving into its 50th year in business. Richard loved to travel, play golf, fish, hunt, spend time with all of his friends, and could dance the night away. He always said his favorite times, however, were spent with his two grandsons, Dan and David. He also had a special place in his heart for his dog, Brandy. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 15, from 2pm-5pm at Candle Light Funeral Home, located at 1835 Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD. The funeral service will be held on Monday, January 16, at 10am at Candle Light Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens located at 2150 Mt. View Road, Marriottsville, MD 21104. For those desiring, donations can be made in Richard’s memory to the American Heart Association or Gilchrist Hospice Center in Howard County, located at 6336 Cedar Lane, Columbia, MD 21044.
