Robert Wayne Callahan, known always as Wayne, son of Raymond Henry and Mary Callahan, devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, died peacefully in his sleep after a long struggle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis on 18 July 2022 at the home of his daughter and her husband in Reisterstown, MD. He was 88 years old. Preceded in death by his brothers Ray and Don Callahan, survived by wife Donna, sister Lois Costlow, daughters Denise (David) Copperthite and Deborah (Jonathan) Van Hoven, son David Wayne Callahan (partner Marco La Bianca) and four grandchildren Kayla (Tommy) Volpe, Karley (Nick) Parrish, Maxwell and Brett Van Hoven.

Wayne was born in Ehrenfeld, Pennsylvania in 1933. Following his high school graduation he worked 4 years in the foundry and laboratory of a steel mill. He entered the army and was stationed at Fort Meade, MD from 1954-1957. Following his service he attended St. Francis college, now Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA, graduating with a major in History in 1960.
Wayne and his wife Donna were inseparable and deeply in love. They wed in 1960 and moved from Pennsylvania to Baltimore, Maryland where Wayne went to work as Medical Statistician with the Social Security Administration.

They welcomed twin daughters Denise and Deborah in 1964 and moved into a new home in Catonsville, Maryland. Their son David was born three years later. Wayne’s deeply loving, kind and generous nature was evident to all who knew him. Among his joys was camping and over the years he took his family all over the east coast and Canada. Wayne and Donna retired to Florida and spent 17 years traveling extensively throughout America and Europe, returning to Baltimore in 2017 to be closer to their daughters and 4 grandchildren. Wayne’s family cared for him in his final months, enjoying his humor and kindness up until the end.

A private service to honor Wayne’s life will be held on August 2.
