Roy M. Fredrick

On September 10, 2017, Roy M. Fredrick of Catonsville, Maryland passed away surrounded by his loving family.

Roy was born December 17, 1937, in Hampden, Maryland to Roy E. Fredrick and Mildred Jenkins Fredrick. He graduated from Baltimore City College in February of 1956. He held various jobs before joining the Baltimore County Police Department on October 12, 1959.

On March 8, 1959, he married Janet Willingham of Oella, Maryland at the Oella Methodist Church. They settled into family life and bought their house in Westview Park on September 11, 1964, where they raised two daughters, Karen Fredrick Garrison and Joyce Fredrick Maygers.

Roy enjoyed supporting his daughters’ activities, such as the Johnnycake Junior High School Marching Band and Edreco Softball.

He served in the Maryland Army National Guard for 10 years and he volunteered at the Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Company. He was an excellent marksman and instilled his love of target shooting and collecting firearms in his grandson Mike.

He turned his love of photography into part of his career with the police department, working in the crime lab. Later teaching crime scene photography at Baltimore County Community College. He was CSI before CSI was cool.

Roy was an early adopter of technology. He was involved in the ham radio community and later the CB radio community, where he was known as Shutterbug. He was a mentor to many young people and helped them appreciate communication.

By the mid 1980’s, he had taught himself how to use a home computer and he provided computer support to the Westview Park Civic Improvement Association.

Over time they enjoyed five grandchildren, Kevin Tabor, Michael Molloy, Katy Molloy, Samantha Maygers and Kari Maygers, three great-grandchildren followed, McKenzie, Madison and Connor Molloy. They were the light of his life and he was their Pop-Pop.

Upon retirement from the police department after 30 years of service, he joined the team at Quest Diagnostics, where he worked for almost 20 years until his final retirement at age 70.

In addition, Roy was one of the 10 original members of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #4, a member of the Boumi Temple, the Catonsville Masonic Lodge and Maryland Commandery.

He loved science fiction, Benny Hill and NCIS. He had a dry sense of humor and beautiful smile.

Roy will be missed by everyone who knew him and he lives on in the hearts of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that he adored.
