Ruth Eleanor (Bowman) Kahler

Ruth Eleanor Kahler, 93, of Catonsville, MD and Brevard, NC, passed away in her sleep, June 11, 2016.

Ruth was born in Poplar Springs, Howard County, Maryland.  She graduated from Lisbon High School in Lisbon Maryland and then completed the nursing program from South Baltimore General Hospital.  Ruth was as a Registered Nurse (RN) and worked for Summit Nursing Home; Kernan Hospital; Provident Hospital / Lutheran Hospital / Liberty Medical Center / Bon Secours Hospital System; and, Charlestown Retirement Community.  She stopped working as a nurse at age 74.

She was a be-loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who lived a long and wonderful life sharing her time with family, dear friends, church, associates and the community.  Gardening and babysitting her grandchildren were high on her list of hobbies.  She also enjoyed traveling, many a summer day at the shore house with family, and annual excursions to Fenwick Island, DE.

Ruth will be dearly missed, but will live on in our memories for generations.  Always in our thoughts, forever in our hearts.

Ruth Kahler is survived by her sister-in-law, Kathleen Bowman; three daughters and their spouses, Ruth and Linwood Butler, Beverly and James Kopf, and Jacalyn Hoffman; two sons and their spouses, William and Barbara Kahler, and Michael and Deborah Kahler.  She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Jeffrey Thew, Thomas Hoffman, Michelle Carlin, Karyn Shackelford, Brandon Hoffman, Timothy Thew, James Kopf, Daryl Hoffman, Courtney Smith, Heather Kopf, and Wyatt Butler, and spouses; plus 17 great-grandchildren; and, many nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Joan Kahler; great-grandsons, Matthew Burbage and Ethan Carlin; mother and father, Mary and Albert Bowman; sisters and their spouses, Emma Bowman, Ida and Harry Schwinabart, Annie and Charlie Bowen; brothers and their spouses, Urban and Louise Bowman, Albert and Mildred Bowman, Howard Bowman, Roland Bowman, Paul Bowman, Millard and Eleanor Bowman; mother-in-law, Edna Kahler; brother-in-law and spouse, Oliver and Dorothy Kahler; and, sister-in-law and spouse, Margaret and Charles Meushaw.

Visitations will be held from 1:00 – 3:00 pm and 5:00 – 8:00 pm, Thursday, June 16, at the Candle Light Funeral Home by Craig Witzke, 1835 Frederick Rd., Catonsville, MD 21228

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, June 17, at Catonsville United Methodist Church, 6 Melvin Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228 (410-747-1886).  Interment will follow at Poplar Springs United Methodist Church, 915 East Watersville Road, Poplar Springs, MD 21771.
