Sandra Stokes Brown
Born in Bastrop, Louisiana on January 6, 1945 to William Arthur Stokes, Jr. and Vera Stokes (Harrison). She passed on January 27, 2020 and is survived by her loving son William Brown, sister Patsy Stokes Jordan, and adoring grandchildren Kian and Mia Brown. Raised in Albany, Georgia, after attending Texas Christian University, she left for New York City to pursue classical ballet training at Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and performed in theatre productions, such as the traveling company for the Broadway’s Half a Sixpense.
After leaving New York, she founded her studio, Dance Arts, in Macon, Georgia where she taught ballet, jazz, and musical comedy. She then married Carlyle Brown, and moved to Atlanta where they raised their son, William Ramseur Brown. She continued to teach, as well as be engaged in the Ballet and Theatre community into her later years.
After retiring, Sandra and Carlyle moved to the mountains of Waynesville, NC where she wrote her first novel, One Eye Sleep. Never one to stay complacent she took up painting in her later years, and became quite proficient.
For the last seven years, Sandra lived in Catonsville, Maryland, near her close family. She was involved in the Patapsco Overlook community and made meaningful connections with her neighbors. A grandmother of two, she took great pleasure in spending time with her family. Sandra was known for her kind and compassionate heart. A memorial service is planned at the Candlelight Funeral Home on February 17, 2020 at 2pm.
