Sean Michael Shaw

Sean Michael Shaw was born June 12, 1967, at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland.  He was named Sean before he was born by his mother only after she agreed that he would always be called Sean Michael and never just Sean Shaw. Sean Michael is survived by his son Henry, his father Ray, his step mother Eileen, his brothers Ray Jr, William, Patrick, his sisters Colleen and Emily, his sister-in –laws Jill and Sally, many aunts, uncles and cousins from Sean’s mothers side (Miller’s and Tucker’s).

Sean Michael loved his Aunts and Uncles in a special way because of the early passing of his mother, Elizabeth M Shaw, in 1973.  The family was always very supportive of Sean Michael and his brother, Ray Jr. in the weeks, months, and years following the death of their mother.  His surviving Uncles and Aunts are Eugene and Diane Shaw, George and Millie Miller, John and Laura Schnur, Irwin Greenberg and Margaret McCarthy.

Sean attended pre-school in Princeton, New Jersey and after his mother’s death moved with his father and brother to Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia and Israel.  Sean went to elementary school in Worms and Heidelberg, Germany, Terriana, Italy, and Riyadh Saudi Arabia.  Sean started high school in The American School in Tel Aviv, Israel and after his father’s retirement, Sean and his family settled in Ownings Mills and he finished High School in Owings Mills, Maryland. After high school Sean attended Garrett County Community College and Frostburg State University and was always active in ROTC.

Sean Michael played soccer and his real loves were downhill skiing and scuba diving.  He was an accomplished “European Style” skier and he conquered many a mountain on the east coast (Maryland, Vermont, New Hampshire, the Rocky mountains (Vail, Park City, Squall Valley and Heavenly Valley) and in Europe (Switzerland, Val de Sere France and Innsbruck Austria). Sean was a master scuba diver and visited such places as Bahamas, Caribbean Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aqaba, Sharm El Sheikh and of course our own Baltimore Harbor (cleaning the bottom of our sail boat).

Sean Michael always loved the military, the army in particular.  He joined the Maryland National Guard and served in the artillery organization for many years.  He worked his way up to the rank of sergeant.  After 911, he was called to active duty and was deployed to Washington, Virginia and Louisiana for military security.  His final deployment was in Guantanamo Cuba at the GITMO prison.  While he was serving there he was seriously injured and was medevaced to Newport News Medical facility where after extensive rehab was honorably discharged in 2009.  Sean returned to Baltimore establishing residency in downtown Baltimore on Fayette Street.

Sean had lingering health issues related to his injuries in the army and the Baltimore VA Health Systems provided outstanding care and support to Sean and his family.  Sean was admitted to the intensive care unit on April 15th due to a mass infection and his physical health deteriorated rapidly and on May 2 at 9:28 pm surrounded by Henry, Ray Jr. and his dad, Sean died peacefully.

The family wants to thank the VA Medical Center and the University of Maryland staff for all the years of good care, support and kindness they showed not only to Sean Michael but our family.  They accepted Sean’s decisions and supported his wishes.

Graveside services will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery on May 20, 2017 at 11 am.  In lieu of flowers and per Sean Michael’s request, donations can be sent to Wounded Warriors Project at support.woundedwarriorproject.org/Donate.
