Sylvia Waters Gundy

On January 6, 2023, Sylvia Waters Gundy passed away peacefully after a valiant battle with cancer, at the age of 90.

Sylvia was born in Baltimore on December 23, 1932 and attended Douglass Senior High School and graduated from Morgan State College, where she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  She was a community activist, leader, and educator.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Gundy Jr., and brother, Donald Waters.

She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  Sylvia will forever be remembered by her loving brother, David Waters (Marlene), her children, Leslie Gundy lll (Cheryl), Michele Cole and Michael Gundy (Pojanee) and her four grandchildren, Lesley-Anne Gundy (Behrad), Britney Holsendolph (Joseph), Darryl Gundy and Michael Gundy Jr.

Sylvia will also be sadly missed by her four great-grandchildren, Peyton, Emery, Gilan, Kayhan, nieces, nephews and her extended family and dear friends.

Sylvia also received a master’s degree in social work and later retired as a licensed clinical social worker from Maryland Family and Children Services.  After retirement, she worked part-time at St. Ignatius Loyola Academy as the school’s first social worker and counselor and served as a mentor to many students, parents, and colleagues.

Sylvia was an avid reader and a longtime book and investment clubs member.  She was an active member of her church at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church in Catonsville, MD where she taught Christian youth education. Sylvia will always be fondly remembered as a wonderful woman who dedicated her life to serving others and for her caring and gentle nature.
