William (Bill) Arthur Lord was dearly loved by family and a wide network of friends. He grew up in Washington, Indiana in the loving family of his parents, Elizabeth and Robert Lord, and siblings Gordon and Mimi. When young, Bill spent his days digging tunnels in the yard and playing with his father’s old army toys. As a teenager, he could be found at the downtown pool hall or at the golf course. In college, he developed a talent for statistics and problem-solving via all-night bridge sessions with his roommates rather than studying. Nevertheless, he found an affinity for economics and pursued it through college, doctorate studies, and 30-plus years of university teaching, mostly at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Bill had a lively mind and loved to be intellectually engaged. No matter what the subject, he rather enjoyed playing devil’s advocate and relished the challenge of a debate. He was an assiduous student of household economics, politics, and sports. Bill also had a rich spiritual life and built deep relationships within his community. He was devoted to his daughter, Sarah, and was an ardent supporter of her passion for sports and her own growing interest in economics. He stayed in frequent contact with his beloved mother, Libby, and was a tremendous comfort to her in her older years. Anyone who engaged with Bill encountered his quick wit, his fascinating and analytical perspectives, and his compassionate heart.
