James Donald “Pop” Gary, 86, died peacefully on December 31, 2022.  He was born in Baltimore, Maryland to James A. Gary and Rosella Gary (Nee McDade).  James was predeceased by his father and mother, by two sisters - the late Katie Gary and Ida Henn, and by his son -the late Joseph Gary.

James is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years - Mary Carol “Tollie” Gary (Nee McCartney), by his loving children - daughter Molly Zaruba, son-in-law Paul Zaruba, daughter-in-law Angela Gary, and son Timothy Gary, by his four granddaughters - Kylie, Sophia, Eva and Celeste, and by his dear siblings - Joan Cashour, Roy Gary and Kevin Gary.

James graduated from Mount Saint Joseph High School in 1955 and immediately served in the United States Coast Guard.  James then earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Baltimore.  His professional career culminated within the Maryland Government Retail Sales Tax Division.

A true patriarch, James loved to be surrounded by friends and family.  He cherished hosting the infamous, annual Gary 4th of July Party and other holiday events.  He welcomed all to his home and annual family beach trips. He was renowned for his stories which most frequently illustrated his adventures and antics with friends or preached the values and keys to a good and happy life – such as integrity, family and community.

James loved people and was an advocate for youth development. Even before his children were old enough to participate, he led a boy scout troop for several years in Indiana.  James held leadership roles in Catonsville youth sports organizations. Over the span of decades, he coached and refereed numerous youth and young adult sports teams including baseball, softball, basketball and football with the Catonsville Youth League and the Catholic Youth Organization and others.  He was a long-standing member of the Maryland Board of Football Officials and refereed high school football for decades.  He also enjoyed working with the sideline chain crews at University of Maryland, Baltimore Stallions and Baltimore Ravens football games.

James was an avid golfer and until recent years frequented Forest Park and Carrol Park golf courses. His imperfect swing led to many perfect tales of saves from the sand, behind boulders or deep within the trees.

James had a vivacious spirit and a generous heart.  He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
